Welcome to my digital portfolio.
My name is Hal, I’m a young artist and designer from Sussex, United Kingdom. I’m currently doing an Art and Design Foundation specialising in Graphic Design,
with a background in Fine Art and an experimental approach to visual commmunication.
My work is purposeful and people focused and I’m always ready to explore new ideas. I love taking risks and pushing myself to improve, drawing energy from music, films, culture, politics and the everyday things that make people curious.
I’m open to all kinds of creative collaborations and always excited to see where new projects take me.

DESCRIPTION

This project required me to create a poster design for the creative industries end of year show at Brighton Met. I began by researching semiotics; Symbols of evolution, risk taking, community and more. I landed on two visual ideas; a tightrope and a paint jar ring. The circular shape representing evolution and community and the tightrope representing taking risks and striving for excellence.

The multiple figures become more balanced as they come forward, representing a sense of self development and improvement over the course of the year. After experimentation with this figure on a tightrope concept, I realised that it was important to consider representation and inclusions, which is why a quite obviously male figure wasn’t going to work. So, I created a slightly more ambiguous silhouette to represent the whole college slightly better.

I experimented with an alternative idea, eliminating the tightrope element and going with something a bit more abstract. The cellophane projection background is an attempt to mimic the unwrapping of ideas, a celebration perhaps, still using the same font: clash display. I experimented with overlapping text; a visual blending of formality of the college with the creativity within it. The chirography adds energy as well as a human touch. The overlapping and image underlay also adds depth and texture.

I played around with colour and composition alot throughout this project, finally arriving at the last one.
